SVS Clinical Research Consortium Promotes Interest in Clinical Trials

SVS is committed to encouraging the interest and development of clinical trialists among the SVS membership. In November 2007, the SVS Research Council's Clinical Research Consortium (CRC) searchable database was launched on VascularWeb. The database contains profiles of SVS members interested in clinical research and serves as a resource for industry professionals and principal investigators seeking vascular surgeons for clinical research trials.

Research Council Chair, Dr. Richard Powell, said, "It is important, both to patients and the specialty, that vascular surgeons play prominent roles in clinical trials. We hope the CRC will facilitate access to quality clinical research sites. The CRC will allow both industry and vascular surgeon PIs to identify potential high quality vascular surgeon clinical researchers when planning multicenter trials."

To join the CRC, members complete a brief questionnaire that indicates areas of research interest, case volume, and research experience. A profile is created and posted on VascularWeb. To date, more than 160 vascular surgeons have joined the CRC.

Users can search for vascular surgeons by name, geographic area, clinical volume, clinical research area, and previous research experience. All clinical research areas are included: cerebrovascular disease, lower extremity arterial disease, renal bypass and stenting, thoracic aortic disease, abdominal aneurysms, venous disease, and medical treatment of vascular disease. SVS is promoting the database to industry who may contact the surgeon directly to discuss potential collaboration and further assess resources, infrastructure, and patient volume at the site.
